Mukono Afriendly Town
Mukono the legendary right 'hand' of the Kabaka of Buganda Kingdom
The town of Mukono has its origin from the legendary Ssekiboobo family, a prominent
County Chief who established his head quarters in Ggulu one of the territorial
wards of Mukono town today.
Ssekiboobo was a great confidant of the King and through him the subjects sought
favours from his master (the King). Believed to have been the seat of the first
King (a demi-god) of Buganda Kingdom, Ggulu meaning 'paradise' became a pride
to Ssekiboobo, who because of his relationship with the King made a reputation
as the right 'hand' (omukono) of the King. This reference to Ssekiboobo and
his village as the right 'hand' (omukono) of the King later evolved to be known
as Mukono as we presently know the place.
Mukono gained its importance as a business hub in 1927 when one Hamu Mukasa,
a prominent landlord, persuaded Indians, who had come to Uganda to construct
the historical 'Uganda railway', to start business in the area. In subsequent
years the growing trade in coffee, cotton and grain attracted businessmen in
the neighborhoods to settle at Mukono, leading to the emergence and development
of the trading center. Mukono became a township in 1958 with the influence of
the Buganda government. In 1967, it became a town board with a total population
of 2,000 people.
Mukono attained the status of a town council in 1989 with a population of about
40,000 people and is soon to be upgraded to Municipal status, when it will be
joined to its sister town of Sseeta. Mukono town has grown from the small trading
center of the 1920s to a modern town of about 31.4 sq. km and an approximate
population of more than 50,000 people todate.
